How a planning application might be decided

The Council has one Area Planning Committee that meets every four weeks to make decisions on planning applications and consider whether to take action against unauthorised development.

The Planning Committee is advised by the Development Control Team: professional planners who carefully assess proposals against local and national planning policies. For Planning Committee dates and agendas please see our Committee Diary.

If you wish to make your views known about a planning application, you may request to speak at the Committee. If you wish to address the Committee, please contact Customer Services before 11 a.m. on the day of the meeting.

One person only is allowed to speak from each of the following categories:

  • the Parish (or Town) Council
  • a supporter
  • an objector
  • the applicant (or their agent)

Remember, if you have already written expressing your views on the application, the Planning Officer will have taken your views into account when preparing the report. Please see our Planning Committee procedures guide (PDF, 2 pages, 227kb).

Although the Planning Committee decides the major applications and those which attract significant objections, the power to deal with most minor applications has been delegated to the Head of Planning. For further information on what applications are delegated, please see our Scheme of Delegation (PDF, 10 pages 41kb).
