- Kirkbymoorside - Wednesday
- Helmsley - Friday
- Malton - Saturday
Pickering Market - Monday
Pickering is an historic market town and the official gateway to the North York Moors National Park. It hosts the North York Moors Steam Railway, which is England's longest steam railway, operating an 18 mile line to Grosmont through the heart of the North York Moors National Park. The town also boasts Pickering Castle, Beck Isle Museum, a theatre and hosts many events throughout the year.
The Market is held every Monday in the Market Place and is popular with both locals and tourists.
Parking is available at the Ropery (short stay), Vivis Lane (long stay) and Eastgate (long stay).
Pickering is reputed to be one of the oldest towns in Ryedale, founded by King Peredurus around 270BC. The rights, privileges, perquisites, advantages and appurtenances to host markets were granted to the Local Board for the District of the Township of Pickering and their successors. This was given at the Palace of Westminster under the seal of Our Duchy of Lancaster on 26 June 1878 and a market has taken place in this traditional market town ever since.
Kirkbymoorside Market - Wednesday
Kirkbymoorside Market is held every Wednesday on the cobbles of the main street of this historic market town, situated halfway between Thirsk and Scarborough on the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park. The Market has been operating since 1254 and is believed to be one of the last privately run Markets.
The Market is run by the Management Committee of the Town's Memorial Hall, which was bought by the townspeople in 1920 and the market rents help to keep the Hall open for the benefit of the community.
There is also an indoor Table Top Sale and Café held in the Memorial Hall each Wednesday. The Market is easy to find – about 600m from the roundabout on the A170 and Town Farm car park is only a few metres from the Market Place.
Helmsley Market - Friday
This pretty market town lies right on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. Duncombe Park, the ancestral home of Lord Feversham, sits in attractive parkland at the edge of the town. The town is home to a Norman castle and an ancient market cross, as well as old coaching inns and a varied selection of tearooms.
The market is held in the central, ancient Market Square every Friday. In addition to the market, a craft fair is held most Fridays above the Old Town Hall.
Parking is available at Cleveland Way (long stay) and on the Market Place (short stay) on non-market days.
The market is alleged to date back to the 13th century. A charter was created by Robert de Ros to his Burgesses of Helmsley. There is some doubt as to whether this Charter was incorporated and may have been suppressed by the Earls of Rutland around 1520, however a market has taken place on the current site since 1467. It was originally held in the churchyard with the market cross being moved from there to its current position. In 1670 the Duke of Buckingham established a Charter market in Helmsley establishing a weekly market and three fairs. Between 1784 and 1861 the tolls were collected by the Thorpe family. In 1966 the market was subject of a conveyance to the Rural District Council of Helmsley by a Vesting deed involving the Earl of Feversham Trustees.
Malton Market - Saturday
The historic market town of Malton, although quaint and tranquil, is a centre of commerce for Ryedale and the North York Moors National Park. There are many interesting attractions in the town including a Roman fort, a museum and a restored period cinema.
The Market operates every Saturday, under the management of the Fitzwilliam (Malton) Estates. There are two livestock markets (Tuesday and Friday) each week and regular farmers markets.
Malton Market is situated in the Market Place, right in the centre of town where free parking is available.
Parking is available free of charge in the Market Place for a maximum of 2 hours and a certain amount of free on street parking for 2 hours is also available. Car parks are located at Water Lane (long stay and short stay) and Wentworth Street (long stay).
Pickering and Helmsley markets are managed by the Council, Malton market is managed by the Fitzwilliam Estate and Kirkbymoorside market is managed by the Memorial Hall Committee.
