Litter and dog waste bins

Litter and dog waste bins are usually the property of the appropriate town or parish council but are emptied either by one of the Council's street cleaning operatives on a daily/weekly basis or by a waste collection crew on a weekly/fortnightly basis.

If you know of an area that may need a litter or dog waste bin, please contact your local Parish or Town Clerk and ask them to pass your suggestion on to the Parish or Town Council.

For information on street sweeping and cleaning or to report a full or overflowing dog or litter bin, please submit an Enquiry Form or telephone 01653 600666.

For information on the types of litter bins we recommend, please see our factsheet (PDF, 1 page, 114kb).

It is estimated that the UK dog population produces 1,000 tonnes of faeces every day.

If you think there is a need for a dog bin in your area, please contact your local town or parish council, or contact the Community Team for more information. Dog bins around the district are provided by the local town or parish councils. We have installed dog bins on our own property where appropriate.

The design of the bin ensures that the waste is contained and any smells or unpleasantness are kept to a minimum. Some dog bins have dispensers for dog waste bags close by, which are designed to help you easily pick up after your dog.

We work in partnership with North Yorkshire Police to allow local Police Community Support Officers and the Council's own officers to issue Fixed Penalty Notices for littering and dog fouling.
