Tourism contributes more than £300m to Ryedale’s economy – new report shows

A new report has highlighted the contribution tourism makes to Ryedale’s economy.

The report, which was commissioned by Ryedale District Council from an independent research unit, examined the volume and value of tourism, and the impact of visitor spend in 2018.

According to the findings:

  • There were 5.59 million trips to Ryedale in 2018
  • Whilst the region saw a slight decrease (1%) in the number of nights spent in Ryedale, the number of day trips increased by 4% on the previous year
  • £236.4m was spent by tourists during their visit to the area in 2018 – however the total value of tourism activity (taking wider spending into account) was £318.4m – a rise of 9% on the previous year
  • Tourism was estimated to have supported 7,550 jobs, including full-time, part-time and seasonal jobs. This was 9% up on 2017.

Commenting on the report, Phillip Spurr, Ryedale District Council’s Programme Director for Economic Development, said:

“This report reinforces the fact that tourism is a vital industry for Ryedale. Not only does it support jobs, it makes a major contribution to our district’s overall economy and it is very encouraging to see that the overall figure for tourism spend is on the rise.

“Obviously we can’t be complacent and as a Council we are working to support the tourist economy, and spread the word about the excellent visitor offer we have here in Ryedale.

“We have beautiful countryside, fascinating attractions and vibrant market towns – and of course Malton’s reputation as the food capital of Yorkshire. But it’s important to remember that people also play a huge part in making our tourism sector a success. We’d like to say a big thank you to all the people who work in our visitor attractions, hospitality venues and related businesses, for making it such a positive year for tourism in Ryedale.”
