Ryedale residents urged to claim £140 off their energy bills

Ryedale residents could save £140 off their fuel bills, but you need to apply now.

As part of the Warm Home Discount Scheme – a scheme introduced by the Government and delivered by the larger energy suppliers – vulnerable Ryedale residents could stay warm for less this winter. The Warm Home Discount Scheme helps those in need with their winter energy costs, by paying a credit onto the energy account of the qualifying account holder.

Major energy suppliers have signed up to the scheme and have set eligibility criteria for receiving this. To be eligible, customers must be receiving the Savings or Guarantee & Savings element of the State Pension.

The Leader of the Council, Cllr Keane Duncan commented;

“We are keen to ensure that all residents do not miss out on claiming this fund, which will help reduce their fuel bills when the winter months arrive. The timing of the Discount will ensure that residents will remain warmer when they most need it.”

So who gets the Warm Home Discount?

You are automatically eligible for the Warm Home Discount if you are:

  • In receipt of the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (no Savings Credit) or
  • In receipt of the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (even if you get Savings Credit as well)

This group is referred to as the 'core group' of those eligible.

If you don’t fall into the core group, you may still be able to get the Warm Home Discount, because some suppliers also offer the discount to a ‘broader group’ of customers, such as low income households, especially low income households that contain young vhildren. In these cases, each supplier has its own eligibility criteria and a limit on how many discounts it will pay out.

Aside from being eligible, you also have to check that your supplier participates in the scheme (small suppliers especially may not offer it). You must also check that your name (or your partner’s) appears on the electricity bill and or gas bill (if Dual Fuel).

How can I claim my payment?

Core group
If you are eligible for the Warm Home Discount as part of the core group, you will receive a letter in the post. This letter will confirm that your Warm Home Discount will be automatically deducted from your electricity bill.

Your supplier uses information obtained from the Department for Work and Pensions to identify the core group and automatically provide the discount.

However, if you haven’t received your letter and think that you may be eligible, then contact the Warm Home Discount Scheme team on 0345 603 9439, available Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm.

Broader group
If you think you might be eligible as part of the non-core group, you must make a claim for the Warm Home Discount.

Start by finding out if your supplier offers the discount. You can make a claim for Warm Home Discount on your supplier's website or by calling them.

Broader group applications through an energy supplier are usually open from October. Contact your current energy supplier to find out more.
