Malton and Norton infrastructure scheme

Ryedale District Council and North Yorkshire County Council have worked together over a number of years to identify opportunities to improve the issues of traffic congestion and poor air quality in Malton and Norton. This includes jointly funding the upgraded A64 Brambling Fields junction several years ago to an ‘all directions’ junction which has enabled traffic to avoid travelling through the town centres.

More clearly needs to be done but the constrained road network (particularly the pinch points at the level crossing and at Butcher Corner) means there are no quick and easy solutions that will solve all of these issues.  We have continued working together to investigate and progress further improvements, ranging from small-scale initiatives (e.g. improved cycle parking facilities) through to major infrastructure projects (such as new and improved junctions on the A64).  The larger schemes are inevitably more complex, more expensive and take longer to develop and deliver.  They are also often dependent on securing additional funding from central government - which can never be guaranteed.

It is therefore important to continue to investigate how the existing road network can be improved in other ways.  As part of this work, North Yorkshire County Council is consulting on proposed changes to junctions, signals and traffic flow in the towns. You can read information on the proposed scheme here.

We would encourage residents and businesses to take a careful look at these proposals, and the reasoning behind them, and to give their comments to North Yorkshire County Council by completing an online survey which will run until Friday, April 30.

The survey for the proposals can be found here.

Paper copies are available on request from the County Council’s customer services on 01609 780780.
