Winter roads

NYCCThe County Council is responsible for gritting primary and secondary roads within the North Yorkshire County Council area, when weather conditions may prove hazardous (ie freezing temperatures). They may also provide grit bins for public use on roads and pavements in potentially dangerous areas.

Visit their website for information and maps on winter gritting routes across the county.

In partnership with Highways North Yorkshire, the County Council also checks and prepares gritters, snow ploughs and snow blowers to make sure they are available at the first signs of frost and snow.

The Cabinet Office has developed a new Winter Weather web page on GOV.UK, which brings together winter preparedness material (floods and extreme weather, power cuts, travel) and news in one place.

These roads are maintained by private contractors on behalf of the Highways Agency. Email them or telephone 0300 123 5000.

old malton in snowYes! We work in partnership with NYCC by gritting and clearing snow on priority footways before 9 am in the main town centres of Malton, Norton, Pickering, Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside and Thornton-le-Dale. Streetscene also carries out gritting and snow clearance for all key council-owned sites including car parks and swimming pools.

We support other partners in the district including Town Councils, North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, North Yorkshire Police, Yorkshire Housing and Fitzwilliam (Malton) Estates.

Severe winter weather inevitably impacts on the refuse and recycling collection service.

The primary aim is to ensure the safety of employees and to take no risks with the waste collection vehicles. Our operatives are instructed to take no unnecessary risks if they are unsure of the road conditions in some areas.

If waste is not collected, where possible please leave it out for collection and, as soon as vehicles can safely access areas missed, all waste will be collected including extra bags and boxes. We will continue to operate the alternate weekly collection pattern alongside the collection of any missed waste.

Every effort is made to continue to provide normal services wherever possible and practical. Thanks are expressed to all residents for their patience and understanding when collections are disrupted.
