Release of CCTV evidence

Publication of the procedure and conditions under which CCTV evidence may be released to third party organisations (police, statutory authorities etc.) or to members of the public.

CCTV cameras are in use at a number of Ryedale District Council’s buildings:

  • Ryedale House,
  • The Depot, Showfield Lane, Malton
  • Derwent Lodge, Norton-on-Derwent

Other cameras are mounted on Streetscene’s refuse and recycling collection vehicles.

Body Worn Video (BWV) is also worn by Parking Enforcement Officers who patrol in Ryedale. This service is provided by Scarborough Borough Council and BVW is used in accordance with their Code of Practice.

The primary objective of the scheme is to provide a safe public environment for the benefit of those who live, trade, visit, service and enjoy the facilities in Ryedale. This objective will be carried out by the pro-active monitoring of the system and will:

  • Assist in the detection and prevention of crime; along with the maintenance of public order.
  • Facilitate the apprehension and prosecution of offenders in relation to crime and public order
  • Reduce the fear of crime and provide reassurance to the public
  • Provide the Police and the Council with evidence to take criminal and civil action in the Courts
  • Assist in improving the environment in the areas monitored including town and city centres
  • Provide assistance to emergency services

The cameras on the refuse and recycling vehicles are for the purpose of:

  • Investigating accidents and near miss reports
  • Operational and performance management
  • Protecting the Council from fraudulent insurance claims
  • Responding to health and safety concerns
  • Protecting Streetscene employees against violent, abusive or threatening behaviour

The CCTV system may be used to supply recordings for evidential purposes to the Police and other bodies having prosecution powers, such as Customs and Excise or the Health and Safety Executive.

The CCTV systems are registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office and are operated in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Surveillance Camera Commissioners Code of Practice

For more information visit the Surveillance Camera Commissioner's website.

Footage may be requested either as a Data Protection Act subject access or Freedom of Information request.

Please see the Council's Data Protection and Information Management Framework for more information.
