You can compost in a container, or by starting off a traditional heap, using a mixture of grass cuttings, fruit and vegetables and torn up paper or card.
Visit the RHS website, if you’d like a step-by-step guide to home composting.
Get Composting is working with City of York Council and North Yorkshire County Council to provide an exclusive offer on home compost bins.
Help and advice
The North Yorkshire Rotters are fully trained volunteers who offer advice on composting, plus tips on how to reduce your food and garden waste.
North Yorkshire County Council website also has ideas, advice and information about how to make compost and how to use it in your garden.
How we compost your garden waste
If you’re signed up to our garden waste service, then all of the garden waste collected from your home goes to local farmers to be composted.
It’s important that there is no plastic or any other contamination in the bin.
If you’re not signed up to the garden waste service and have large quantities of garden waste to get rid of, then you can take it to any Household Waste and Recycling Site. They have separate recycling facilities available for garden waste.
