Environmental information regulations

The Freedom of Information Act gives rights of access to a wide range of information. However, rights of access to environmental information held by public authorities including local authorities are provided by a separate statutory regime, the Environmental Information Regulations 2004.

Environmental information covered by the regulations includes the state of the air, atmosphere, water, soil, land, landscape, as well as factors affecting the above elements such as substances, energy, noise, radiation or waste, emissions and discharges into the environment.

Interpretation of environmental information requests

Any request for information should be in writing and should include:

  • the address of the property concerned
  • what information is required
  • a map and grid reference (if possible)
  • specific concerns if they have been highlighted previously
  • a response name, address and contact number

The response will include a written reply to the evaluation and interpretation of data, with as much information as possible for home buyers, conveyancing solicitors, environmental consultants or other interested parties.

There may be a charge for obtaining certain types of information. Please submit an Enquiry Form to find out more.
