January – Donate don’t dump

This month’s focus for Ryedale District Council’s Don’t be a Waster – Reduce, Reuse, Respect campaign is reuse – particularly for furniture and household items.

The campaign is encouraging residents to donate, not dump, furniture and other items that could be reused by local charities and reuse groups.

And the popular Saint Catherine’s charity shops specialise in good quality second hand furniture (as well as clothing) – they have shops in Helmsley, Malton and Pickering. You can either call into their shops or call them to arrange to drop off items for reuse.

There are online options such as Ryedale Freegle, where you can offer things you don’t need and ask for things you’d like. There are more than 1,400 local people in this group actively offering items for reuse.

The Community Furniture Store, which has stores in York and Selby also has a third store in Scarborough which covers parts of Ryedale. They take donations of furniture and white goods which are suitable for reuse and make them available at low cost to people who need furniture.

The Kirkbymoorside Give or Take Days are popular (they’re usually held in April and October) and are a great way of giving unwanted items to others who could make use of them.  The organisers are currently looking for a volunteer van driver to help out. If you can help please contact June Emerson: 01751 430907 or email

And if you have something in need of repair the Kirkbymoorside Environment Group is holding a Repair Cafe at the Moorside Room on Saturday, 20 January from 10am to 2pm. At their last Repair Café event items brought along included a blender, sewing machines, radio, lamps, laptop, secateurs, sheets, radio-cassette player, vacuum cleaner, bike, picture frame, table, boots, CD player and mobile phone.

You can also take items that can be reused to Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) – all HWRCs in North Yorkshire have areas for reuse, if you think your item is in good reusable condition then please speak to one of the site staff.

Another valuable resource North Yorkshire County Council’s reuse directory which lists the local charity shops that take items for reuse.

Remember upholstered furniture needs to have the fire safety label intact otherwise re-use organisations are unable to sell them on.
