Information about waste and recycling services during the Covid-19 emergency

Our teams are doing everything they can to maintain waste and recycling services during the COVID public health emergency. This is how you can help:

  • Help keep our staff safe by keeping at least 2 metres away in accordance with social distancing guidance
  • Please help our teams to do their job by making sure that your bins are available for collection by 6.00am on the relevant day, as we might have to alter the timings of our rounds at late notice.
  • Double bag waste and keep separate from other waste for 72 hours if you are self-isolating or are ill with Covid-19 like symptoms
  • Please do not put tissues or masks in your paper recycling bag/box
  • Wash your hands before and after putting refuse and recycling out for collection
  • Please squash your recycling to fit more in your recycling boxes/bag but if you have extra please take to our mini recycling bring sites whilst making your essential trip for shopping
  • Use an additional box for extra glass (waste collectors will return it)
  • Minimise your rubbish and food waste - visit these websites for useful hints and tips - Recycle Now and Love Food, Hate Waste
  • Before starting any big DIY or gardening jobs – think about any waste it will create – the household waste recycling centres (skip sites) are open for essential use only. Check the NYCC website for more information. Garden waste and building rubble cannot be placed in your household rubbish bin (black/green bin)

About waste collection during COVID

Our teams are doing everything they can to maintain waste and recycling services during the COVID public health emergency.  In the event that we need to cut back on services, we will prioritise domestic refuse collection for public health reasons.

The health and safety of our staff is very important, so during this COVID outbreak we are increasing our health and safety measures.  We will be running additional vehicles with smaller crews, to maintain social distancing.  Our operatives will have hand sanitiser in their vehicles and we are disinfecting vehicle keys regularly.

Remember to check your bin day over public holidays as this might change.
