Economic reports and forecasts

The Council works to secure the long term economic plan for the district as well as developing shorter term initiatives, activities and events. The priorities in Ryedale are outlined in the Ryedale Economic Action Plan. Our work includes regeneration, business and skills, creative and visitor economies. We also work with the voluntary sector to promote social enterprises.

The Ryedale Economic Action Plan, updates and SWOT analysis are available in our Web Library.

Long term, we are working with the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) on the 'Strategic Economic Plan'. This is the submission to Government for large scale capital funding for economic infrastructure such as highways, employment land, training establishments and housing sites up to 2020. It also outlines revenue funding for skills, training and business support. It will cover the LEP area of York, North Yorkshire and East Riding.

In Ryedale, our early priorities follow the Local Plan Strategy and are;

  • Improvements to the A64
  • Employment land in Malton, Pickering and at the DEFRA site at Sand Hutton
  • Local highways improvements to enable growth in employment and housing sites in Malton and Norton and to access employment sites in Kirkbymoorside
  • Town centre infrastructure in Malton
  • Improving high speed broadband availability in Ryedale

Locally, we are involved in a range of activities:

  • Skills development: Working closely with businesses and partners we promote skills development particularly aimed at young people entering the workforce
  • Business Liaison: We work with both individual businesses and with business networks such as the Federation of Small Businesses and Tourism North Yorkshire
  • Community Based Economic Activity: Supporting communities such as market towns groups, business groups and community groups to develop activities and initiatives to enhance the economy
  • Visitor Economy: Promoting Ryedale as a visitor destination and supporting businesses in this sector to raise spend per visitor
  • Creative Economy: Exploiting the rich talent in the arts and heritage sectors in Ryedale to support economic outcomes
  • Social Enterprise: Encouraging 'not for private profit' enterprises in sustainable development
  • Regeneration: Working in the public realm to create viable and vital public spaces, opening employment land and improving transport and communications connectivity
