provided to the public by Hackney Carriage and Private Hire
drivers. In this section of the website, you'll find:
All drivers, vehicles and operators undergo strict checks before
being licensed. Please see below some useful information for

Hackney Carriages
A properly licensed vehicle may be identified by;
- "Taxi" sign fixed to the roof of the vehicle
- A blue plate bearing the Ryedale District Council logo, fixed
to the rear of the vehicle
- The plate should state the number of persons that the vehicle
can carry before breaching legislation and invalidating the
insurance.
- These vehicles can be flagged down in the street, if available
for hire, or can be hailed from a rank within the district.
- A meter fixed inside the cab, which must be engaged at the
start of your journey and a table of fares must be
displayed.
Private Hire Vehicles – these must
be pre-booked, otherwise their insurance is invalidated.
A properly licensed vehicle may be identified by;
- A yellow plate bearing the Ryedale District Council logo, fixed
to the rear of the vehicle.
- The plate should state the number of persons that the vehicle
can carry before breaching legislation and invalidating the
insurance.
- All fares must be agreed at the time of booking

School Contract Vehicles Only
These vehicles have limited use and can only operate under a
contract, issued by North Yorkshire County Council, to carry school
children to and from a place of education. These can be
recognised by
- A yellow plate, bearing the Ryedale District Council logo,
carried within the vehicle
- The plate should state the number of persons that the vehicle
can carry before breaching legislation and invalidating the
insurance
All drivers go through rigorous checks before been licensed.
- A Criminal Records Bureau check
- Medical
- Driver training
- And conform to strict licensing criteria
Once licensed, all drivers must wear a Council issued badge,
visible to the customer.
The Council has an obligation to keep a public register of all
licensed drivers. If you would like a current copy of the register,

Ryedale District Council expect all licensed drivers to behave
in a professional manner at all times, adhering to strict licensing
