Abandoned Vehicles Reporting
If you suspect a vehicle may be abandoned, please contact us
using the form link to the right, email
Streetscene or
telephone 01653 600666. We will investigate and take the
necessary action.
What do we do?
- We have the authority to immediately remove any
abandoned vehicle from a road
- We have the authority to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) of
£200 to anyone abandoning a vehicle. This includes vehicles
abandoned on a private road or in a housing estate
- We have powers to immediately dispose of or destroy
any vehicles that are considered to be abandoned and any vehicles
without a license and registration, with no obligation to trace the
owner
The Abandoned Vehicles Officer will contact the Police to check
whether they are aware of the vehicle and the DVLA for relevant
information regarding the registered keeper. We will always try to
find the owner but, if this proves impossible, or the owner does
not collect the vehicle within seven days of being
contacted, we may dispose of the vehicle.
A vehicle can be disposed of as soon as the necessary
conditions are met, without waiting for the license to expire.
The Law
The Clean Neighbourhoods & Environment Act 2005 is
legislation giving local authorities powers to deal with
behaviour affecting local environmental issues. There are a
number of powers in the Act, giving Councils the opportunity
to take firmer action against those who spoil and/or deface the
local environment.
Dealing with abandoned vehicles has been time-consuming and
expensive duty for local authorities. The above Act has
extended the categories of vehicles that may be removed, thus
reducing problems of vandalism and fire damage.
