Helping Ryedale and Scarborough get cheaper energy bills

Ryedale (RDC) and Scarborough Councils (SBC) are supporting a scheme to help you get a better deal on your gas and electricity bills.

To help residents in Ryedale District and Scarborough Borough get a better deal on their energy bills, the council is working with switching partner iChoosr, who run many energy switching schemes across the country.

What are the benefits? The scheme is free to use, without obligation and makes it easy to switch energy provider. Some residents have made savings of up to £264 a year. We use collective purchasing power to try and secure better deals for everyone.

How does the scheme work?

Energy suppliers are invited to bid their lowest tariffs to supply energy to all those signed up for the scheme. Individual offers are sent out and you can then decide whether you want to switch to the new deal (there is no obligation to accept the offer).

Free prize draw

Anyone registering during the registration period will be automatically entered* into a free prize draw. This will be drawn every week throughout the registration period, starting from 22 March and running until 16 May 2016.

It is open to Ryedale District and Scarborough Borough residents. From the people that register that week, someone will be selected at random and they will have a choice of 3 prizes that promote energy efficiency. The prizes include an energy efficient kettle, radiator fan and LED light bulbs. By registering for the collective switch, residents will be automatically entered into the free prize draw.

*If residents do not wish to be included in this prize draw, they will need to complete the form on the website to opt out.

The prize draw is not open to councillors and employees of Scarborough Borough Council (SBC), Ryedale District Council (RDC) or their families living in the same household, so staff registering for the collective switch will need to opt out of the prize draw.

Step 1: Anyone who pays a household energy bill can register for free. Registration is easy - you just need a recent energy bill or annual statement.
Step 2: After close of registration iChoosr will gather everyone's registrations together and invite energy companies to offer their best prices for energy to everyone in the scheme. iChoosr do this for you. You don't need to do anything.
Step3: You then receive a personalised offer on the new tariff secured by the scheme, based on the information you gave when registering. You will see exactly how much money you could potentially save if you accept the offer.
Step 4: You choose to switch or not. There is no obligation to accept and there are no fees or charges. You simply get a new offer that could potentially save you money on your energy bills.

How much money might I save by switching?

We can't guarantee you will save money. It will depend on your current energy use and the price you currently pay for your energy. You may also already be on the best value tariff for you. Similar schemes run by other councils have seen yearly savings of between £60 - £200 per household*.

Oil Buying Scheme

Ryedale District Council in partnership with Scarborough Borough Council through Choices4Energy is delivering oil-buying co-operatives across the two council areas.

Oil is an expensive source of heating fuel and residents do not have the same facilities to undertake price comparisons as with gas and electricity. Through setting up of oil cooperatives which bulk buy oil in a small geographical area, preferential rates can be achieved, reducing the cost per litre of oil to the householder.

Residents can save up to 10% on their oil heating bills by being part on an oil buying cooperative*. The more members the oil buying cooperatives has, the better the saving that can be achieved.
