In Bloom
A group of volunteers are brightening up areas
of Malton and Norton with plants and shrubs. Malton and Norton’s
gardening club - The Derwent Diggers -have been working with
the two Town Councils to identify areas that could be enhanced with
planting schemes.
First to be completed is the area by Malton’s
War Memorial on York Road which has been planted with a number of
shrubs to give all-round colour to this major entrance to the
town.
In Norton, work will start soon on the area in
Church Street adjacent to St Nicholas Street car park and the
garage to renew plants in the two raised beds.
Margaret Shaw of Derwent Diggers said, “ We
are delighted the Town Councils are helping with this project, we
would like to get the community involved in improving their own
street. Residents in other towns have planted community
orchards, help yourself herb gardens and strawberry hanging
baskets. If anyone has any ideas for areas we could look at
over the next few years we’d be really pleased to hear from
them.”
Funding for the improvements has come from the
two Town Councils and Ryedale District Council’s
REACT
fund which aims to
support community-led environmental action in Ryedale District.
