Ryedale District Council

Household Canvass 2016

Every year we are required to check the details of everyone registered to vote in households across Ryedale to ensure the information we hold is up to date.  We are doingEnglish Logo Landscape RGB WEB this between September and November 2016.

We have sent a letter to all households with the information we currently hold on the register for that property and asking you to let us know of any changes.

When the letter arrives, please check the details and respond to it as soon as possible. If you are able to use the web link www.elecreg.co.uk/ryedc included in the letter to respond, then it will save us money.

We need to make sure that our electoral register records are correct. Being registered to vote gives you the right to participate at elections and could improve your credit rating.

If you are unsure or require further information, please get in touch with our Elections team:

Do you need to register?

Register now if:

  • you're not registered already; or
  • you're not sure if you're registered (don't worry about registering twice - we'll check for that); or
  • you have recently moved home or changed your name; or
  • we have told you that your electoral details don't match other records (this is nothing to worry about - it just allows us to confirm your details).

How to register to vote

  • Everyone is responsible for registering themselves. Under the old system the head of every household could register everyone who lived at their address
  • You need to provide a few more details to register – including your national insurance number and date of birth. This makes the electoral register more secure

  1. Go to the GOV.UK Register to Vote page. It is quick, easy and free
  2. Fill in your name, address, date of birth and a few other details. You’ll also need your national insurance number, which can be found on your national insurance card, or in official paperwork such as payslips, or letters about benefits or tax credits. Can't find your NI Number?
  3. Look out for a confirmation letter to advise you further

Every year we send out forms to each household to check/update the details of the occupants for the electoral register.

The initial forms are usually sent out in September, with reminder letters sent out in October. We also send out canvassers to visit properties that have not responded to the canvass forms.

Who can register?

If your name isn't on the electoral register, you can't have your say in issues that affect you, and it's harder to get a loan, mortgage, finance agreement or even a mobile phone contract.
In order to vote in a Local Government, European or  Parliamentary election or in a local or national referendum you must be registered on the Electoral Roll (Register of Electors). You can register to vote if you are:
  • 16 or older (although you can't vote until you're 18); and
  • a British citizen; or
  • an Irish, qualifying Commonwealth, or European Union citizen living in the UK.

It’s simple: if you are not on the electoral register, you won’t be able to vote. If that’s you, why not take five minutes to register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote?

If you have any queries regarding your application, please contact us on 01653 600666.
