Summer Safe Driving Campaign
Motorists
are being urged to watch their speed as they travel around the
district's roads this summer – or face the consequences.
Road safety officers will be taking action against anyone caught
driving over the limits – as they target residential areas during
the school summer holidays.
Members of the Ryedale Community Safety Partnership are backing
the North Yorkshire 95 Alive summer drink drive road safety
campaign which will also see messages broadcast on local radio
stations and road safety events being held in Market towns across
the District.
The campaign launched this week at Ryedale House will see an
increase in partnership working to reduce deaths and serious
injuries on the roads in Ryedale.
"Operation Siren shows that drivers are still speeding," said
North Yorkshire County Council Road Safety Officer Susan
Gallagher.
"It is vital drivers consider the safety of children and elderly
people who live in our area - speeding and drink driving are proven
to be major factors in road related deaths and injuries."
The Partnership said the number of people that are injured or
die on the roads can be reduced by following these simple
rules:
- Stay within the speed limit and don't be distracted when
driving through built up
areas
- Plan journeys adding additional time for any delays that may
incur
- Check the car is geared up for summer driving - keep the
windscreen wash topped up
- If you are driving stick to soft drinks and consider nominating
a 'designated' driver when taking in visits to the pub or summer
barbecues.
One hour after this picture was taken PC Mark
Gonella (pictured above) stopped a Kawasaki motorcycle on the A64
bypass travelling in excess of 120mph. The rider, a 51 year
old man from Stockbridge, Sheffield has been reported and will
appear before Scarborough Magistrates Court, where it is likely
that the court will consider disqualification.
