Ryedale residents views play a key role in the future of local Post Offices

The views of  Ryedale residents will play a key role in the future of local post offices.

Yesterday's(January 23)  announcement by  Postal Affairs Minister Edward Davey that the future of post offices up and down the country has been secured with the planned introduction of the Postal Services Act comes as Ryedale is chosen as one of the pilot areas for the possible partnership of some council services with the Post Office

In December 2012 Ryedale District Council's Overview and Scrutiny Committee took part in  review of Post Offices,  finding out how people in Ryedale use and value their local Post Office and have considered the future options for improving the availability of services in local communities. The Council now has a greater understanding of the Post Office network in Ryedale and feels better equipped to support local Post Offices through any future changes.

The government has now published proposals for sustaining the post office network and as a result of the work undertaken by the Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Ryedale District Council will be working  with Post Office Ltd and the Department for Business Innovation and Skills to help to inform the shape and function of the post office network.

Cllr Robert Wainwright, Chairman of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee said ' Ryedale District Council  understands the value of the Post Office network to communities in Ryedale.

I am delighted with todays announcement which shows that the views of local people of the vital service provided by our post offices have been taken on board by the Government .

We will continue work closely with our local post offices and develop effective ways of joint working to access services provided by the Post Office and Ryedale District Council.

Ryedale District  Council is now in a position to try to influence the development of the network in Ryedale for the benefit of residents and communities across the District'
