Free Compost Give Away Day
Ryedale District Council is giving away free bags of
compost to help green-fingered residents with their gardens.
In support of a "Gardener's Question Time Event" planned for
Malton on Saturday 21 August, Ryedale District Council is giving
away free bags of compost to local residents. Simply turn up at the
Cattle Market, at the top of Malton Market Place, from 10am to 3pm
on the Saturday and claim your free bag.
This is Ryedale's first free give-away day and has been arranged
by popular demand. Residents have been asking for some time if they
can get hold of compost made from garden waste, collected from
their brown bins. So Ryedale District Council has teamed up with
Gwilliam Recycling from Ebberston to provide residents with this
free soil conditioner, completing the recycling loop.
"Garden waste from brown bin collections is composted at a few
local farms and Ed Gwilliam, one of the farmers from Ebberston, has
been involved from the start of the scheme," said John Brown,
Ryedale District Council's Recycling Officer. "Once collected from
households, garden waste is composted in big open-air windrows,
screened and shredded to make a useful soil conditioner," said Mr
Brown. All the material meets British compost certification
standards.
As well as the free bags of compost, a limited number of
subsidised home compost bins will also be available for sale on the
day, for £6.
To get your free compost, simply turn up at Malton Cattle Market
on Saturday, 21 August 2010. Bags will be provided.
