Domestic Abuse World Cup Poster Campaign
"When the match was over"
A major campaign to help blow the whistle on domestic abuse is
being launched across North Yorkshire for the duration of the
football World Cup competition.
Approximately one quarter of all women and one sixth of all men
encounter some form of Domestic Abuse within their lives and only
half of these incidents are reported to the police. Domestic Abuse
increases during the World Cup partly due to excessive drinking and
high emotions following particular matches.
Scarborough and Ryedale Safer Communities Partnerships are
working together with other Countywide Partnerships to initiate a
confidential 24-hour Domestic Abuse helpline across North
Yorkshire. Trained professionals will be at hand to provide advice
and support to victims for the duration of the World Cup (11 June –
25 July).
An awareness poster, 'When the Match was Over, It Really Kicked
Off!' has been distributed to pubs and other licensed premises
across Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale signposting people to the
Domestic Abuse helpline.
Sarah Hill, Director of Independent Domestic Abuse Services
(IDAS), the organisation which will be providing the telephone
support on behalf of the county, said
'It's shocking that a great sporting event is marred by an
increase in reports of domestic abuse. However, we are
pleased to be part of the countywide initiative that aims to get
the message across that abuse is never acceptable.
We feel that the 24 hour helpline will provide a vital service
to victims at this time and I would urge anyone who is affected by
abuse to please come forward, use the helpline and get the support
that you deserve.'
