Refuse - Litter Enforcement

We are working in partnership with North Yorkshire Police to allow local Police Community Support Officers and the Council's own officers, to issue £50 on-the-spot Fixed Penalty Notices for littering.

According to ENCAMS (Keep Britain Tidy), local authorities spend about £342 million on street cleaning and litter clearance. The most common forms of litter such as cigarette ends, sweet wrappers and matchsticks alone add up to an estimated 122 tonnes of such litter that is dropped every day across the UK.

The offence of "Leaving Litter" (S87 of the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) 1990) is a criminal offence and either the police or local authority can prosecute offenders.
