Forthcoming Changes to Domestic Waste Collection Service - Plastic Bottles and Cardboard

The current refuse and recycling kerbside collection service has been in operation for over six years and Ryedale has an excellent track record recycling over 50% and ranking first in Yorkshire and Humber since 2006.  Residents have expressed a desire to recycle more of their domestic waste and the Council has responded by changing its vehicle profile, allowing a wider range of recyclable materials to be collected from the kerbside.

Consequently, the existing kerbside recycling service will be complemented by the addition of Plastic Bottles and Cardboard. This change in service for all domestic properties is planned to be rolled out across the District between October 2011 and spring/summer 2012.

The new service will comprise:
Week 1
Non-recyclable waste for landfill - green wheeled bin

Week 2
Garden waste (composted on local farms) - brown wheeled bin
Plastic BOTTLES and cans - existing green box
Glass - additional 40 litre black box - to be provided
Paper and cardboard - Blue bag

Give or Take Day Events

Reuse logoInterested in setting up a waste exchange event?

Community groups in Ryedale have already run successful Give or Take Day events in Kirkbymoorside and Malton. ‘Give or Take’ days are community waste exchange events, giving the chance for people to pass on unwanted household items, such as bric-a-brac or furniture, and for others to pick up something they really need.  And it’s all for FREE! KMS Environment Group

Give or Take Days offer an exciting opportunity for people to have a clear out of household items cluttering up their home or garage, and provides others the chance to pick up items they need. Most people have something they would be happy to donate and there is usually no shortage of items.

The events also offer those on low incomes, or tight household budgets, a chance to pick up household items they need. By exchanging goods we can all save a bit of money.

It’s fun for all the family and you never know, you might find something that you have always been looking for – for free!

If you need more information about how to set up your own ‘Give or Take ‘day contact Streetscene by email on streetscene@ryedale.gov.uk or telephone (01653) 600666.

The Waste Collection Commitment
In August 2009 the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) in partnership with the Local Government Association (LGA) set out details of a new national initiative - the Waste Collection Commitment. All local authorities have been invited to make a commitment to adopt the first set of principles for a good waste and recyling service, based on the views of the public.

The Commitment aims to help local authorities improve residents' satisfaction with how their rubbish and recycling is collected and to boost recycling levels. The commitment, which is based on research from residents' views on their likes and dislikes about their existing services and in consultation with local authorities, sets out in simple terms the principles which should underline domestic waste and recycling services.

The Commitment is strongly supported by the York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership and all partners are encouraged to sign up to the initiative.

The Council agreed to sign up to the Commitment in January 2010 and the document is available to download in the sidebar to the right.

Ryedale is a beautiful place to live, work and visit and we all benefit from the superb environment throughout the district. Reducing waste going into landfill is a top priority for Ryedale District Council as well as the UK as a whole. To help residents to 'do their bit' and reduce the need to send waste to landfill we will recycle as much as possible.

We are committed to providing high quality waste collection and recycling services to the residents and businesses of Ryedale. We recognise that the delivery of effective and value for money waste and recycling services should result in a cleaner and greener environment.

We aim to work in partnership with our community as everyone can play their part in reducing waste and taking part in recycling.

Waste and Recycling Service consists of the following activities:

  • a collection of household waste that will go to landfill
  • a kerbside collection of green waste for composting
  • a kerbside collection of dry recyclable materials
  • assisted collection arrangements for elderly and disabled residents.
  • a bulk waste collection service for bulky items (chargeable)
  • Commercial Waste collection from local businesses
  • advice on how to reduce waste and increase recycling

What we will do:

  • Collect your waste and recycling material on the scheduled collection day
  • If we miss your collection we will return to collect it as soon as possible
  • Leave your streets clean and tidy after collection
  • Help people with limited mobility with collection arrangements
  • Let you know of any changes to your collection days and let you know well in advance the arrangements for Christmas and Bank Holidays
  • Promote waste minimisation and recycling
  • Let you know how well we are doing in reducing and recycling waste
  • Work with businesses to reduce commercial waste
  • We will collect domestic refuse and recycling materials
  • We will respond promptly in response to your requests.
  • Our staff will be courteous and helpful at all times
  • We will provide value for money services

How you can help:

  • Remembering to present your waste and recycling materials before 6am on the day of collection
  • Making sure your waste for landfill is contained within your wheeled bin or black sack (extra bags will not be collected)
  • Not putting items such as waste oil, paint, rubble or metal bars in your bin
  • Taking the opportunity to reduce the amount of waste your household or business creates.
  • Considering home composting as an alternative to sending your waste to landfill.
  • Reporting fly-tipping
  • Telling us when you have a concern about what we do
  • Treating our employees in the same way that you wish to be treated
