Emergency Planning
The District Council has experience in dealing with major
emergencies affecting the local community and visitors.
The advent of the Civil Contingencies Act has confirmed the
District Councils role as a category 1 responder. As such we have a
number of plans in place and carry out extensive planning in
conjunction with many different partner agencies such as the County
Council, neighbouring councils, Environment Agency, utility
companies and local communities.
Major Emergency Incidents
Incidents occur that due to their scale or nature, will
require Local Authority Support.
The District Council provides a vital link between the
Emergency Services, County and other District Councils and other
agencies, in order to provide a co-ordinated response in the event
of an emergency.
Major emergency incidents can occur in a number of ways, some
of the more common being severe weather, fluvial flooding,
transport accidents and industrial accidents.
Major Accident Hazards
The one thing that you can be sure of in an emergency
situation is that it will probably be the last thing that you
expect.
Severe weather, floods, transport accidents, terrorist action
or incidents involving dangerous substances or chemicals usually
strike without any warning. For this reason the District Council
work closely with our partner agencies to ensure that our range of
plans and procedures are up to date and provide an effective,
flexible and timely response to all types of emergency.
Ryedale District Council also has a Major Emergency Policy and
a Flood Defence Policy that are available to download online.
