Maintenance and preservation of sites of historical or cultural interest and ancient monuments within the local authority area. In many cases this may be undertaken jointly or wholly by third party organisations (English heritage, National Trust etc.).

A scheduled ancient monument is a building which is considered to be important enough to be worth protecting under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act (1979).
