Births: registering

By law you must register a baby’s birth within 42 days. The registration itself will take approximately 20 minutes.

Registering a birth is free. The registrar will give you a short birth certificate showing the baby’s name, sex and date of birth. If you are going to apply for a passport for your baby, then you will need a full certificate which includes the parent’s details. Please ask for this during the registration so that your certificate can be given to you there and then.

You will also be given a form showing the baby's NHS number which should be completed and passed to your GP.  If you do not have an application form for child benefit please ask the registrar.

Many offices are only open part time and are by appointment only. You should telephone in advance to make an appointment. This will reduce the waiting time and make sure you are visiting the right office.

Registering of births in Ryedale is the responsibility of North Yorkshire County Council.
