Registration: Therapist, Massage and Special
Treatments
Except where the premises is under the control of a medical
practitioner, a licence is required for any premises in which the
following treatments are carried out: acupuncture, aromatherapy,
EVR (sunbed), steam, sauna, manicure, pedicure, electrolysis, body
and ear piercing, tattooing, shiatsu, reflexology, colour therapy,
GS, and hydrotherapy.
Massage and Special Treatments are controlled under the London
Local Authorities Act 1991 – this applies only in London
Authorities where adopted.
No licence is required for massage and special
treatments in the Ryedale area. Other treatments such
as acupuncture, tattooing, ear and cosmetic piercing,
electrolysis and semi-permanent skin colouring are dealt with
under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act
