Economic Intelligence

Ryedale District Council, in partnership with Yorkshire Forward and the Fitzwilliam (Malton) Estate, have had pedestrian counting sensors (sometimes referred to as footfall counters) installed in Malton.  The counters monitor the level of activity within the town centre and have been installed in five key locations: with two in the Market Place; one on either side of Wheelgate and one on Water Lane.

The operators of the counters, Experian Footfall, automatically receive data from the counters and produce weekly reports on the level of pedestrian activity in the town.  The data will be particularly useful in assessing the success of planned events and how effective these are in drawing people into the town.  The data will build up over time and will allow us to monitor how Malton fares, compared with the national and regional indices as the economic climate changes - as well helping us to assess the effects of any town centre enhancements and developments.  It is important to note that the data does not represent a 'total number of people' - rather it provides an indicator of the overall level of activity on some of the key pedestrian routes within the town.
