Discretionary Housing Payments

The Discretionary Housing Payment scheme covers shortfalls between rental charges and payment of Housing Benefit.

Every claimant who is entitled to the minimum amount of Housing Benefit and who has a shortfall is entitled to make a claim for a Discretionary Housing Payment.

If you are experiencing difficulty paying your rent after you have been awarded benefit the council could give you more money for a short period of time from the Discretionary Housing Fund.  This is only a limited fund and once it has been used the council does not receive any more money until the next financial year so it is not guaranteed that you will be successful when making a claim.

To make a claim for a Discretionary Housing Payment you will need to complete a form, if you are making a claim because of bedroom restrictions you will need to use the appropriate form.

You can do this either by downloading a form, telephoning the Benefits Services on 01653 600666 to request one or requesting one via email benefits@ryedale.gov.uk.
