Discretionary Housing Payments

The Discretionary Housing Payment scheme covers shortfalls between rental charges and payment of Housing Benefit and shorfalls between Council Tax liability and entitlement to Council Tax Benefit.  Every claimant who is entitled to the minimum amount of Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit and who has a shortfall is entitled to make a claim for a Discretionary Housing Payment.

If you are experiencing difficulty paying your rent or Council Tax after you have been awarded benefit the council could give you more money for a short period of time from the Discretionary Housing Fund.  This is only a limited fund and once it has been used the council does not receive any more money until the next financial year so it is not guaranteed that you will be successful when making a claim.

For more information about the scheme take a look at our Discretionary Housing Payment leaflet.

To make a claim for a Discretionary Housing Payment you will need to complete a form.  You can do this either by downloading one from online forms , by contacting the Benefits Services on 01653 600666 and request one to be sent to you or emailing benefits@ryedale.gov.uk and requesting one.
