Council Tax - benefit - backdated claims

A claimant may be eligible for their claim to be backdated if there is a valid reason why they were unable to apply for their council tax benefit earlier.

What is backdating?

When your claim for Council Tax Benefit is received at this office, it is assessed according to the date of claim and the date on which all the necessary information is received at this office. Benefit usually starts from the Monday following the date a claim is received at this office or the Department for Work and Pensions. Your benefit notification letter will tell you the date from which any entitlement to benefit starts. Backdating is when benefit is assessed from a date before the claim was actually received at this office.

To find out more about backdating your benefit entitlement see Benefits - Backdating
