Births: copy certificates

At the time of the registration, one short birth certificate will be issued free of charge. You will be offered the chance to purchase full copies of the birth certificate for a small fee. You will need a copy of the full birth certificate if you wish to apply for a passport for your new arrival! Please ask the Registrar at the time of the registration.

When the register is full it is passed to the central repository at Harrogate.  If therefore you require a further copy of the certificate sometime after the registration then you should apply to the Harrogate office.  If we find that the Registrar is still using the register we will arrange to obtain the copy certificate you require.

If the birth was registered in an area outside North Yorkshire, then you should apply directly to the Registration Service that covered that area.

Registration of births, deaths and marriages is the responsibility of North Yorkshire County Council.  For further information on historical birth searches please see the births section of the County Council website.
