Ward Profiles and a Profile of Ryedale are available below and at all the Council Offices and libraries in Ryedale. These profiles are compiled by the Transformation team from a variety of sources including 2001 Census Data.

Every year North Yorkshire County Council publishes mid-year population estimates for the Parishes and Wards of Ryedale and the Age Structure of the District's population. 
 
Profile of Ryedale (From 2005 Summary except where more recent figures included) 
Ryedale is a predominantly rural area covering 150,659 hectares in North Yorkshire. Geographically the largest district in North Yorkshire, Ryedale comprises a rich agricultural area, as well as including part of the North York Moors National Park. (hectares figure ONS 2001 Census)

Population

In 2001 the Census population figure was Ryedale 50,872. The figures for the Wards containing the towns of Malton and Norton-on-Derwent were 5,023 and 6,943 respectively, and the Wards for the market towns were Pickering 6,846, Kirkbymoorside 3,283 and Helmsley 3,111.
 
The population of Ryedale was estimated at 53,300 in mid-year of 2007 (NYCC October 2008)

Housing Type
Detached dwellings make up 41.1% of the housing stock, nearly twice England’s figure of 22.5%. The percentage of those owning their homes outright is higher in Ryedale at 37.8% than for England as a whole at 29.2%. Also a lower percentage of Ryedale’s population has a mortgage or loan, 31% compared with 38.9% for England. (2001 Census, ONS)

Economic Activity
In the 16 to 74 age group, Ryedale has 64.8% of the population in employment, the figure for England and Wales is 60.6%. The percentage of retired people in Ryedale is 17.3% compared with 13.6% for England and Wales. (2001 Census, ONS)

Employment Types
The wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles businesses together employ the highest percentage of Ryedale’s population, 16.5%. Next at 16.2% is manufacturing, then agriculture, hunting and forestry at 9.6%. In Ryedale nearly a fifth of the employed, 17.9%, work mainly at or from home, whereas for England as a whole the figure is 9.2%. (2001 Census, ONS)

Environmental Profile
Ryedale has many areas of natural beauty and buildings considered by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to be of special architectural or historic interest.
  • 45 Conservation Areas in Ryedale, 12 of which are exclusively within the North York Moors National Park, and 4 are partly within the Park.
  • About 30 Sites of Special Scientific Interest ranging from flower-rich chalk grasslands to lowland woodlands and marshes (SSSI).
  • Over 100 Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC).
  • 5 Regionally Important Geological/Geomorphogical Sites (RIGS).
  • Over 300 Scheduled Ancient Monuments (SAM).
  • Over 2000 Listed Buildings (Ryedale Local Plan 2003).
